Chen Dao Yun, Grand Master and Founder Hong Dao Wushu Academy, U.S.A.

Chen Dao Yun achieved the title of Grand Master and is a renowned Wushu athlete and coach from Wuhu city in Anhui Province, People’s Republic of China. She began her Wushu training at a very young age under the direction of her father, Chen Xi Huang.
In 1960, Master Chen was selected to join the Anhui Provincial Professional Wushu Team. Between 1963 and 1975, Master Chen swept all 1st place All-Around titles in the Chinese National Wushu Championships. She placed first in the changquan, straight sword, and spear categories and also won second place in the traditional weapons category. In 1974 and 1975, Master Chen was appointed team captain of the prestigious Chinese National Wushu Team and was one of the team’s principal performers. In 1974, she and her teammates were invited to the United States to perform at the White House and in seven other states. They also visited Mexico, Great Britain, Mozambique, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. While serving as the head coach of the Chinese Youth Wushu Team, Master Chen led the 35 members on visits to Japan, Hungary, Austria, and other European countries. From 1976 through 1999, Master Chen served as the team captain and head coach for the Anhui Provincial Professional Wushu Team and the Shenzhen Wushu Team of the Special Economic Zone in Southern China. Under her leadership, the Anhui Provincial Professional Wushu Team ranked consistently in the top six places amongst the 32 provinces. The Shenzhen Wushu Team won provincial team championships for 10 consecutive years and compiled over 100 gold medals from national and international Wushu tournaments.

Master Chen has spent most of her life promoting the art of Wushu. She has served in various capacities on governmental committees as Vice Chairperson for the National Sports Association Anhui chapter, Deputy Chief of the Physical Education of Anhui Province, Vice Chairperson of the Anhui Wushu Association, National Chinese Wushu Committee member, Shenzhen People’s Representative committee member, the Athlete’s Cultural and Education Committee member, and a Special Delegate representing the area of sports on the National People’s Committee. The Chinese National Sports Committee named Master Chen one of the “China’s One Hundred Outstanding Wushu Athletes” and was part of the first generation of masters to receive the Martial Arts 7th duan (level) Black Belt in China. Master Chen’s name graces the pages of China’s Outstanding Females, Who’s Who of the Shenzhen’s Intellects, and The Chinese Encyclopedia of Sports. She is also the co-author of The Encyclopedia of Wushu.
In 1999, Master Chen came to the United States to promote Wushu. She taught Wushu seminars in various states. She also gave special performances, lectures, and judged at various tournaments. Since 2000, Master Chen has been invited to perform, instruct, and judge at the annual Ohio Arnold Martial Arts World Games hosted by the California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In 2003, Master Chen served as the head coach for the United States’ National Wushu team in the World Wushu Championships in Macao. The United States of America Wushu-Kung Ku Federation (USAWKF), in recognition of Master Chen’s contributions to the promotion of Wushu in the United States, honored her as an outstanding Wushu coach by bestowing upon her the title of International Martial Arts 8th duan (level) Black Belt.
